Fingering for piano – Beyer – Lesson # 4

In music, fingering indicates which fingers we should use for playing a piece’s notes. Piano’s studies and in particular “the technique” are precisely based on fingering, in order to perform some steps fluidly, for moving on the keyboard quickly and easily. Complex tracks needs, in fact, almost obliged steps for making possible an execution. Here we’re going to explain their importance.

An each finger corresponds a number and on the staff’s notes we’ll find this number. This point will say to us what fingers we should use for playing the notes.

At number one (1) corresponds the tumb,

At two (2) the index

At three (3) the average

At four (4) the annular

And at five (5) the pinkie

This setting is applied for both the hands. Fingers are, in fact, mirroring each others.

Logically, when we’ve some notes without fingering we should use the finger that we feel is most appropriate or that is closest to the notes. Soon we will see that once we adquire a good technical base, we can easily play without fingering…

It’s the time long-awaited: practise.

These firsts two exercises will summarize all that we said in this 4 lessons: you’ve to play notes with separated hands, first with the right hand and then with the left, with appropriate fingers, with right duration. In these exercises we’ll play only the firsts 5 notes of the scale (C-D-E-F-G) putting the right hand’s first finger on the C, the second on the D, the third on the E, the fourth on the F and the fifth on the G. For the left hand we’ve to put the fifth on the C, the fourth on the D, the third on the E, the second on the F and the first on the G.

It will be personal the time to expend, but between a movement (a quarter’s duration) and another of this we must elapse the same period of time.
