In my opinion Stefano Bollani is a great piano player, he really ‘plays’. He sits there on his stool, he plays with Banda Osiris and imitates Angelo Branduardi. So that it is strange to hear him well and realize that, oh, this man is so good!
This days it happened to me to hear a song from the album Bollani Carioca. It was the tico tico! Do you realize? Tico tico ti tico tico tico tà… Bollani managed to play the likes of Tico Tico guitarist Marco Pereira, drummer Jurim Moreira, Jorge Helder on the double bass, great percussionist Armando Marçal, or “Marçalinho”, and saxophonist Zé Nogueira. As if Pavarotti had sung, I don’t know, a folk song.
Then you know, the guy knows how to play his cards. Thus, Bollani has proposed to the virtuous musicians to raise middle tone every Tico Tico…they could not resist the challenge. This is not the only gem of the disc; Bollani Carioca is an album that you will discover (and not just musically speaking). For example, reading the making of, it turns out that Choro is the typical music of Rio, and we had already heard that, without knowing that name.
Choro is in fact the famous Tico Tico No Fubà, as well as the song by Jobim Falando de Amor. Of course, for those who has the chance, it would be better to hear him playing with sounds live. Bollani will be in Barcelona (L’Auditori – Sala 2 Oriol Martorell, Lepant 150 )on thursday the 17th and in London at London Jazz Festival (Kings Place, 90 York Way – London (United Kingdom) from 18th to 20th of November. For all other informations and dates visit the official Bollani website. In any case, the album is not bad …
