William Martin Joel, whose stage-name is Billy Joel, is an American singer, pianist and composer born a little less than 60 years ago in New York.
Since when he was young, he showed a natural bent for classic music until he felt influenced by sounds like those of Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan.
Billy Joel started playing with his first band when he was 14, but only in 1971 he cut his first record.
Popularity came step by step, without so much stir. Same speech for one of his best songs, that is “She’s Always a Woman” in 1978, which placed a paltry 17th in the American chart. But the piece, in spite of its miserable commercial value, nowadays is still listened to. In fact, it is also revived as soundtrack in the TV advert of Calzedonia (a dry goods Italian company).
